Venus Rising: Parental Guidance Suggested

Venus LuxHello Lovers,
Coming out is hard enough but  imagine your parent is a celebrity and having that additional pressure and stigma pushed upon you when come out about your sexuality or gender identity. This is the situation for R. Kelly’s daughter, now son, who recently came out on social media about his intended transition from female to male. I can only imagine the intense weight of that “coming out” on R. Kelly and his new son, Jay.

R Kelly is an internationally known artist in the R&B genre which holds a predominantly African American artist presence and consumer base. We don’t see many African American performers being open about their sexuality or anything else “outside the box” in the mainstream media and when we do it is met with a blunt reaction. Case in point: the backlash against Frank Ocean post coming out, although now subsiding, it reached epic proportions last year. I would imagine R. Kelly is receiving similar backlash from his R&B peers and fans as it is commonly a masculine and high testosterone based group. I also imagine that behavior related to anything “homosexual” of any sense is not tolerated. Mr. Kelly certainly has a hard road to walk and hopefully he will be strong enough to do it with dignity and grace.

More so, my heart goes out to Jay for having the courage to be open about his transition regardless of what barriers he faces from his father, community, or the general public. I commend him for his bravery and hope he continues moving forward to accomplish his life’s goal and achieve fulfillment. Especially under these circumstances, I would imagine you would need to have a thick skin and a lot of positive support. I don’t think I would be able to bear the process of transitioning under all the prejudice and media breathing down my neck.

This brings me to the point of how I believe parents should approach a situation if your child decides to transition. Obviously, this is far beyond your kid getting a Tattoo or introducing their same sex boyfriend or girlfriend. Matters like these require the proper attention and positive approach. Of course there aren’t many educational workshops for parents when it comes to sexuality or gender identity. So hopefully my advice and opinion can help those who could use the guidance and next week I will advise on how one should approach their parents about transitioning.

Parents,
When your child approaches you about their sexuality or gender identity you must set aside your confusion, remorse, and/or disappointment. Understand that this is your child regardless of what path, shape or form he chooses to live his life. Children will grow up and become adults. Just be proud that you have provided the essential life skills, knowledge, and tools that your child needs to sustain itself. Your child is still the same child that you cared for as an infant, the same child you took to school, and the same child you still care and love. Be proud that you have raised an amazing and resilient person that is capable, trusting, and respectful enough to share this life changing moment with you. Do not pity your child but empathize with his struggle and the path ahead. Provide your child the same support, love, and care as you did yesterday. It’s better to be positive or, at least, neutral rather than bring negativity to an already delicate moment. If you feel angry or disappointed, politely excuse yourself for time to process, which is understandable as it can be much to digest. Confide in family members or a friend if needed but use discretion as it is your child’s right and decision when and where he lets others know. If you are confused, process your thoughts and questions with your child and enlighten one another. Bonding and relating at this moment will open opportunities for future conversations and even deepen and renew your relationship. Communication is key at this moment so please refrain from negative feedback, when in doubt, make neutrality your companion. If you need to seek resources for your questions, take the time to search the internet. Otherwise be proud and positive. Do not be pressured as to whether or not you should accept this, just be open and listen. Just taking time to hear about what your child is going through is already being supportive. These new changes can take time. You are a great parent with a child who is comfortable enough to come to you for support and acceptance. This is only the beginning of a new life not just for your child but for you as a parent.

Venus Rising: Fair Play?

Venus LuxHello Lovers!
As you are well aware, I’m all about equality in this world. As a transgender member of our society, I see discrimination on a daily basis. However, we are making strides in our struggle, and as our LGB brothers and sisters have taught us, it is well worth the fight.  We are on stage and screen, grace the covers of magazines and now are emerging in the world of sports. That said, recently I was asked about my views on transsexuals in professional athletics and the fairness of them competing. I had to think on that and do a little digging for the facts to know my true feelings on this issue and weigh both sides.  Can the basic physical structural differences between a man and a woman give an edge to a Female to Male transsexual over a genetic male in a footrace ? Should a Male to Female transsexual like Fallon Fox be allowed to fight a biological woman professionally?

Some argue that it comes down to when the transition takes place. This is especially relative to intersex children and babies born with ambiguous genitalia. The parents have to choose the assigned gender and are the deciding factor in their child’s future, which in this situation can hinder a child’s potential, or possibly maximize it in sports or any situation regarding physical fairness. So I would argue back that even an early transition prior to puberty still leaves behind the basic structural building blocks of the original gender. You can alter it, but never truly erase it.

In the case of Fallon Fox, the answer to me is more cut and dry. Even though Fox chose to make a full transition, I believe she still has an advantage as her body was already fully developed. A transition post puberty, and by her own admission a transition occurring at the age of 31, has already allowed all the innate male gender qualities and physicality to root. Bone and muscle composition solidifies in adolescence. Had Fox went on hormone therapy at a young age prior to 12 or 13 or when puberty kicks in then I would physically see no difference between her or any other women on the street. Even though Fox chose to make a full transition, I believe she still has an advantage as her body is already developed. She may lose the muscle mass but she will still have the bone structure.

All that said, I ponder if we do need MTF and FTM Transsexual games. It’s not discrimination for us to have female athletes compete solely with females and males with males. Why should this be any different? We are not an orientation after all but a gender with all it’s own facets and molecular twists and turns. Maybe in this particular case, a little segregation is a good, safe and fair solution to a most complicated issue.

Venus Rising: AB or not AB?

Venus LuxHello, Lovers!
We discuss so many varied things in this forum ranging from social change, love, global views and, of course, sex. This week, I wanted to discuss a topic that affects not only me, but all my colleagues across the board : AB 1567, California’s condoms in porn bill.
Along with most performers who have protested against the bill, I too object to the removal of my right to not wear condoms on a porn set. It’s already challenging to have “porn style” sex. Performing can be uncomfortable with the distorted angles and positions we have to twist ourselves into to capture the proper camera angles. Imposing the mandatory use of condoms just adds another challenging layer of discomfort.
I’ve heard what most mainstream porn girls have to say about the bill, but I feel that it affects I and my fellow TS performers far more greatly. Because we are born genetically male, most of our work requires us to be penetrated anally while also penetrating others. Transsexuals are often left desensitized from hormones, and of course, condoms add to the challenge of being able to perform on the spot. The fact that we have no other option but anal penetration also causes us to endure further discomfort with condoms leading to a chain reaction of bad performance that, in my view, can lead an amazing performer straight to the unemployment line.
From a business standpoint, because TS performers are going to be so heavily affected by the condom law and it’s physical limits and implications, studios will be left with poor quality content, leading to a drop in sales, not to mention the cost of added production time wasted to shoot  content with these new hurdles. The issue of wearing or not wearing condoms transcends physical comfort and infringes upon our first amendment rights and the pursuit of our careers and our lifestyles. It’s already a general challenge that transgender males and females do not have specific rights and resources and are treated on a completely different tier, why bash one of our main sources of livelihood?
No topic is off limits here as you can see, and I want this week’s column to serve as an introduction to a conversation on this topic. I know how we feel as performers, but how do you feel as consumers? Does a condom affect your ability to fully fantasize and enjoy the experience or does it not make any difference at all? Would it affect your viewing habits and choices? I truly want to know what my fans think about this controversial issue so please share your thoughts with me.

Venus Rising: Blurred Lines

Venus LuxHello Lovers!
It’s Pride in L.A. and the GLBT community is at the forefront of my thoughts this week. That, coupled with my general preoccupation with sex, got me thinking about orientation and gender and how the lines for terms that used to put all of us into our tiny little boxes have most assuredly blurred. As much as change and visibility is a good thing for those of us that have transitioned, I’m starting to think we may need some better definition.

Many of you may already know how I feel about transsexuals being included with the GLBT community as a whole. It implies that being transgender is an orientation when it is actually a  gender. I don’t know how we got lumped in to that equation, but more than likely it’s because we didn’t fit neatly in with society’s definition of gender at the time. I love my GLBT brothers and sisters, don’t get me wrong, but when you think about it, it truly is apples and oranges.

That got me thinking, with Facebook feeling the need to incorporate 51 gender options to identify by, are we also in need of a new word for those who are only attracted to transsexual people? Are we finally ready for another sexual orientation to be added to the books? Certainly, adult films, the media, and mainstream entertainment all reflect the physical fascination with us and it seem the public at large is finally ready to embrace the transgender populace. Certainly we are sexual beings and others are attracted to us but I have yet to hear a word bandied about to do define that.

I personally think it would be awesome if there was a word created for those drawn solely to transgenders and it’s inception can’t happen fast enough for me. Obviously, I think, actually, I know, that transgender people are a third gender and that attraction isn’t neatly defined by the terms straight, bisexual, or gay.  Is “TS friendly” too vague and snarky? Perhaps “transic”? I’m certainly pondering it.  So lovers, give me your input: what is the perfect term we should use describe those who are sexually attracted to transsexuals?

Venus Rising: Pride In The Name Of Love

Venus LuxHello,Lovers!
Summer has arrived with a bang this June! So many activities to partake in, so many events to celebrate.  June also marks the kickoff and celebration of Pride across the nation. It’s the time of year when gays, lesbians, and transgender people from around the globe congregate to showcase their love and pride of simply being who they are along with honoring the influential supporters who have contributed their efforts and,  in some cases, their very lives to the cause of tolerance. Joyous and extravagant as the parades may be, the true definition of pride lies within the stories and the journeys of those who have worked tirelessly to progress the GLBT civil rights movement and won the right for all people to be accepted for who they are.

It appears that being gay or lesbian is more widely accepted now than ever before. Especially with prevalent  gay and lesbian idols in the current mainstream media such as Ellen DeGeneres, heartthrob actors like Zachary Quinto, and , more recently, openly gay athletes like NFL player Michael Sam. All of these public figures broke  barriers for  the GLBT community and gained wider acceptance for us all merely by being themselves and living honestly. That is Pride in action. When those of us in the public eye come out, it isn’t so much as a personal decision but a message to all those struggling to live the life they want to that it’s okay to be themselves. By being open, we decrease fear, hate crimes, suicide and the myriad of maladies that plague our isolated members of society when they think they are alone in their sexual identity. I am proud of of the strides we have made together as a group, but what about the transgender community specifically?

There has yet to be an iconic transgender voice in mainstream media that resonates as strongly as our out and proud gay and lesbian public personas do but there most assuredly will be soon.  Recently, the presence of transgender female figures such as model Carmen Carrera, writer Janet Mock, and actress Lavern Cox, featured on the Showtime hit series “Orange is the New Black”, have increased awareness. We also see strong strides from the emerging transgender male community like Annette Bening and Warren Beatty’s son, writer Stephen Ira and, of course, the infamous Chaz Bono.

From the looks of it, the tides are changing, and I want to be a part of that wave and ensure it sweeps the land. We need our strong, stereotype shattering  trans-society to stand up and be counted. I will be attending as many TS/TG pride orientated events as humanly possible this summer and will definitely be throwing my support to my hometown San Francisco Pride parade.  What will you be doing to help the GLBT collective gain acceptance ? I’d love to hear! Remember: you don’t have to be famous to make a difference, you just have to be visible.
